This book was a collaborative project with my fellow mom, Sharon Itkoff Nacache, a perinatal mental health and art therapist. What makes this book especially meaningful to us is that it was created by two moms who also work with moms. I wrote the book from my perspective as both a mother and a perinatal therapist, while Sharon created the illustrations and creative prompts through her perspective as an art therapist and mother.
One thing that was very important to me was simplicity. There are no complicated psychological terms or therapy jargon. Motherhood is already overwhelming enough.
The book is inspired by Winnicott’s ideas of the “good enough mother” and the holding environment, as well as Gestalt therapy concepts, and my own experience of motherhood.
If you are a mom, expecting a baby, or looking for a meaningful gift for a mom-to-be?
You been feeling sleep-deprived and overwhelmed?
Have you been comparing yourself to other moms who seem to have it all together and know how to do everything “right”?
You are been feeling lost in the ocean of parenting information and advice?
Maybe you’re not looking for another parenting advice book.
Maybe you just want to feel held.
From Fantasy to Reality: Real Talk on Early Motherhood from a Therapist Mom is a real, honest, funny, and compassionate look at early motherhood.
Written and created by two therapist moms, for moms, this book makes space for the parts of motherhood we don’t always talk about—the exhaustion, the self-doubt, the mixed feelings, the pressure to get everything right, and the enormous adjustment of becoming a mother.
